CRAIG FALLON PRESENTS SPECIAL AWARD To Hampshire Judo player

Craig Fallon has presented a young judo player with a special award at the WellChild Awards, which took place on Monday evening.

Craig presented the Best Brave Child Award (6-8 years) to Lizzie Lansley, whose doctors weren’t sure would ever walk due to a tumour on her spine, but now does judo and is a 6th Mon. The pair were joined on stage by Strictly Come Dancing’s Ian Waite who presented the other Best Brave Child Award (6-8 years) to Jordan Mount.

The star-studded fourth annual WellChild Awards took place at Lords Cricket Crowd with a host of well-known faces, including the Charity’s Patron Prince Harry, helping to celebrate the amazing achievements of the winners.

The Awards celebrates the bravery of children and young people coping with serious and complex illnesses and conditions – and also honours the dedicated doctors, nurses, teachers, brothers and sisters who go the extra mile to make a difference to the lives of sick children.

As well as meeting her hero Craig Fallon, eight year old Lizzie from Southampton, got to meet Prince Harry, who in a reference to her passion for judo joked, "I will stay away from you - you're dangerous”.

Celebrities joining Craig at the event were Dragon’s Den star Duncan Bannatyne, GMTV presenter Kate Garraway, DIY SOS front man Nick Knowles, the One Show’s Dr Sarah Jarvis, CelebAir host Angellica Bell, TV presenter Michael Underwood, PR guru Max Clifford, Strictly Come Dancing’s Iain Waite, and BBC Newsnight host Emily Maitlis.

Portsmouth's Brett Caswell, 2005 British Champion and 2006 u21 Commonwealth Champion, is continuing his fight back from injury.

The Court Lane Judo Club player has based himself at the judo centre run by 5 time Olympian Jason Morris in New York for a period of intensive training.

The judo players are a regular attraction at the annual Headbanger’s Ball – and this year Caswell was invited to take part. Photos at http://judo.usoc.org/multimedia/photo_gallery_index/351#gallery-header

2008 British Closed Championships

Three Hampshire judo players contested the 2008 British Closed Championships, held in Sheffield on Saturday 1st November. Medallists went forward to form the basis of the new national team in the run up to the 2012 Olympics.

Osaka Judo Club’s Lisa Stevens, now studying at Durham University , fought in the lightest of the women’s weights, u48kg. As expected, Dartford ’s Francesca Steggall dominated the group, with Stevens finishing in fifth place.

Court Lane’s Brett Caswell, the 2005 British champion, used this tournament to launch his competitive comeback. Caswell had not fought since returning injured from last year’s u23 European Championships in Salzburg , Austria .

Fighting up a weight group at u66kg, Caswell found himself in a tough first pool, that included former world championship contestants Sam Dunkley and Colin Oates.

Despite failing to record a single victory for the first at a national championships, Caswell was not downbeat. “This is my first event in a year, I fought in a heavier weight group… This was more about showing my face and letting people know I wasn’t dead! Next year will be far more serious.”

Thomas Tandoi, of Southampton University Judo club, withdrew after two defeats at u90kg.

5 Medals for Osaka at British Championships (Age Banded Nationals)

3 Golds, 1 Silver and a Bronze - that was the medal tally for Osaka at this weekend's British Championships in Sheffield.

On Saturday Austin Jones took gold at U34kg (Band B) and Aidan Jones gold at U38kg (Band C). Aaron McGuire came close to a medal losing a tight bronze medal fight at U42kg (Band C).

On Sunday, competing in the largest weight group of the weekend, Ben Stevens and Leo Burdock put in two worthy performances at U66kg (Band D). Samantha Smith at U70kg (Band D) earned a well fought bronze and Alex Jones just missed out in the final of the U55kg (Band D) to bring back a silver. The weekend was finished off by Natasha Stevens taking gold at U40kg (Band B) with the fastest win in any of the weekend's finals - throwing for ippon in just 4 seconds.

After totting up all the weekend's results, Osaka has emerged as the number 2 club nationally in the medal table.

On the previous weekend Morgan Redman at U34kg and James Hendin at U38kg gained valuable experience in the 2008 British Championships for 10 & 11 year olds in Walsall.
